Mwatate United confident of qualifying for FKF-PL

National Super League side Mwatate FC head coach Andrew Rix Kanuli is confident they will finish within the qualifying positions on the log at the end of the season, to earn promotion to the top tier league.

Kanuli whose side lost 1-0 against second-placed Football Talanta over the weekend, at Ruaraka Stadium, says they have what it takes to defeat elite teams in the league.

“At the moment we are not under pressure because we have a plan on what we want to do in both the first and second leg of the season.

“I’m happy with progress that we have had so far since we started as number last but we currently occupy the fifth position on the log.”

Kanuli says they intend to make the Wundanyi stadium a fortress by collecting maximum points to be in contention for promotion come the end of the season.

“We will play 12 of the remaining 21 games at home. If we can manage to capitalize on our home advantage, we will move closer to promotion because there is no runaway leader in the league this season.”

Club chairman Mbaraka has however decried poor officiating in the league after the referee overlooked what he  termed as ‘three clear penalty appeals’ against Talanta calling for disciplinary actions to be taken against them.

“What we saw yesterday was very discouraging. Our players were clear on goal three times and were fouled by opposition defenders but the referee overlooked our pleas.

“We feel that was clear bias and it is against the spirit of the game. They should be the custodians of fair play as it is required of them by the law,” he lamented.

Elsewhere league leaders Kenya Police fought from three goals down to salvage a dramatic 3-3 draw against APS Bomet to maintain their quest for promotion while giants Shabana’s regression hit a new low after going down 3-2 against struggling Migori Youth at the Migori Stadium.
