Mwendwa assures security for Kenya, Ghana clash

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa has urged Kenyans to show up in large numbers on Saturday to rally their support for the Harambee Stars against Ghana’s Black Stars.

The federation boss assured those planning to attend the African Nations Cup Qualifying clash that security has been tightened up and implored on local fans to tag their families along to shore up the numbers.

Mwendwa issued a stern warning on those planning to cause mayhem that they will face the wrath of the law, adding they are working with National Police and the General Service Unit to prevent any chaos.

“All the security threats will be handled. If anyone causes any trouble in Kasarani tomorrow, they will be picked up by the police, taken to the police station and go to court on Monday for whatever offence you will have committed,” Mwendwa said.

His sentiments come on the back of ugly scenes of fan chaos a fortnight ago where seats were demolished during the Mashemeji Derby when Gor Mahia FC defeated AFC Leopards 2-0 to wrap up the KPL title race.

Striker Jesse Were and defender David ‘Calabar’ Owino are the latest injury blows on Frenchman Sebastien Migne’s Stars after captain and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama also pulled out injured.

Stars have a friendly match scheduled against Malawi on Tuesday before playing Ethiopia away in October in what will mar their third qualifying clash.

Harambee stars are in Group F with Ghana, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia and currently in third position after losing 2-1 to Sierra Leone in their opener . Ghana lead the standings on goal difference having thumped Ethiopia 5-0.
