Nairobi Diamond 10k back after five years

The Nairobi Diamond 10km road race is set to be held on November 30 in the Kenyan capital after a five-year hiatus, organisers have announced.

The event will be making a comeback since 2014 and will be run around Central Business District (CBD) of Nairobi with the start and end point to be placed at the iconic Uhuru Park.

Unlike other races, the event is also unique in that it will be held in the evening beginning at 2pm.

According to Athletics Kenya (AK) Nairobi branch chairman Barnaba Korir, the race that is aimed at nurturing talent has already elicited interests from foreign athletes from Uganda and Tanzania.

“We are happy as AK to work with Right-Here Golazo in order to make this event a success because it is geared towards a noble course of not only nurturing talent but also promote sports in our capital city. Already we have athletes from outside the country who have expressed interest to compete on the event,” said Korir.

The event organised by Belgian firm Right Here-Golazo in partnership with Athletics Kenya will include races for elite athletes, Masters race for the elderly as well as the wheelchair race.

At stake is a sumptuous prize money for the winners at the respective categories, with top athletes in the elite race set to pocket Sh 200,000 while the first and second runners-up taking home Sh100,000 and Sh50,000 respectively.

Winners in the Masters category will pocket Sh20,000 for the winner with the second-placed bagging Sh10,000 as the third placed finishers settle for Sh7,500.

The winner in the Wheelchair race will walk away with sh75,000 as the first runners up and second runners up pocketing Sh 50,000 and Sh 35,000 respectively.

“The intention of this race is to ensure everyone lives a healthy life and we want to urge all of us to come and compete and make this country a moving nation,” said Right Here- Golazo managing director Betty Kairo.

Athletes can register online at www.diamond10kseries.com or visit Athletics Kenya headquarters at Riadha House with a fee of sh1000.
