Nakuru edge Wazalendo to steer to safety

Nakuru men’s hockey club edged Wazalendo 1-0 on Sunday to steer away from the relegation zone as the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) League season entered the homestretch.

Jeff Githinji’s lone goal at City Park was enough to send Nakuru into ninth in the standings with 20 points from 19 matches.

It was the kind of response they would have wanted following their 4-1 defeat to Parklands Sports Club on Saturday in a match whose officiating that drew fierce criticism from head coach Anthony Agesa.

Speaking after the win, Agesa said their plan was to collect six points from their weekend double but the umpire ‘robbed’ them.

“I am glad today we got a win but yesterday the umpire robbed us. He was very unprofessional and he made decisions that resulted to our loss.

“We are planning to win the three remaining matches for us to secure our position in the premier league next season. With 20 points, we are still not safe but we are determined to remain in the top flight league,” Agesa told Citizen Digital.

The result left Wazalendo third three with 29 points in 19 games, 19 points behind the league leaders, Butali Warriors, who stands with 48 points.

Strathmore University crushed the bottom side Western Jaguars 3-0 at the same ground to take their points tally to 28, equal to fourth placed Green Shark’s.

Green Sharks stands at position four with a better goal difference.

Western Jaguars suffered a 4-1 defeat from the United States International University (USIU) on Saturday.

Jaguars’ double defeat has broken their hopes of remaining in the premier league as they are at position 12 with 11 points in the 12 team-league.

To remain in the KHU League, Jaguars need to win their remaining three matches in an event Parkroad Badgers, Kenya College of Accountants University (KCA-U) and Nakuru who are ahead of them loses all the points.

KCA-U is scheduled to host the defending champions, Kenya Police, later in the day at City Park. Police are at second place in the KHU log with 45 points.
