Hosts Nandi County got to a flying start in the fifth edition of the Kenya Youth-Inter-County Sports Association (KYISA) Games that kicked off today at the Kapsabet Showground, Nandi.

The hosts kicked off the championships with men’s volleyball team thrashing Nakuru County 3-0, sets of (25-21, 25-13, and 25-17).

Nandi head coach Richard Soi said he is proud of his charges after a ruthless show against Nakuru as he now aims to lift the trophy once again after doing so in the 2016 edition held in Siaya County.

“I’m happy we managed to win in straight sets although Nakuru were much better in the first set, in terms of quality. Our only target is to win the trophy at home,” said Soi.

Nandi who are the 2016 champions missed the 2017 edition held in Makueni County in April 2018, an inspiration for Soi’s side to do better basking at the home ground’s advantage.

“This is a new team we are building and I expect improvements going forward because we have not been training for a long time,” said Soi.

In the women front it was an entirely different script as Nandi struggled against visitors Nakuru who edged them out 3-2 (25-22, 25-16, 17-25, 19-25, 13-15) in a tightly contested match.

In the only men’s football match of the day, hosts Nandi sunk their counterparts from Makueni 3-0 in an entertaining match played at the same grounds.

Nandi went in front in the 18th minute through Peter Majanga before Baranabas Tanui doubled their lead in 38th minute and Edwin Barasa sealed the tie when he scored the third at the 47th minute.

A total of 18 counties have already arrived for the championships which will run till Saturday.

Four venues have been earmarked to be used in the competition including; Kapsabet Showground, University of Eastern Africa-Baraton, Kapsabet Boys High School as well as the Nandi Hills Stadium which is set to host the closing ceremony.

The annual tournament was officially opened by Nandi Governor Stephen Sang who urged the youths to make use of the Championships to showcase their prowess in different disciplines.
