Ndigiti seeks coach after storming win at Kisii AK meet

World Under-18 bronze medallist Dominic Ndigiti hopes to find a coach to hone his walk skills as he breezed to victory at the second Athletics Kenya (AK) track and field meet on Friday in Kisii County.

Ndigiti, a form two student at Kiendege Secondary School, dominated the men’s 10,000m walk on the Day One of the weekend meet as he rounded up his closest challenger to stop the timer in 43 minutes, 16.06 seconds.

“The race was great though I lacked someone to challenge me. I hope soon I will get a coach so that I can prepare well for next year’s Commonwealth Games.

“Despite the challenges am very grateful to my principal Sharack Nyantika for all the help he has given me. He has even provided me with a special diet that includes fresh milk when am in school,” Ndigiti said.

His schoolmate Wilfred Mbuni clocked 45:40:64 for second place as Edwin Mokua finished third in 50:99:1.

Issac Yego and Maurine Chepkemoi won the men and women 10,000m finals in the second final of the day.

Yego who had come to gauge his endurance level as he prepares for his discipline proper – the 3000m steeplechase took the title in 28:26.09.

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) athlete Stephen Arita (28:45.00) came in second about 20 seconds later followed by Joseph Koech 29:22.06.

In the women’s race Maurine Chepkemoi dominated the 25 lap race to cut the tape in 34:29.80 as Faith Chepkoech (34:45.8) and Jane Nyaboke (34:58.1) finished second and third respectively.

In another final of the day, Bernard Kibet took the men’s 5,000m race honours in15:04:6 followed closely by former World U18 Championships silver medallist Davis Kiplangat.

“The race was very tough because of the track. I was afraid of my friend Kiplangat who was my strongest opponent. Am happy that I was able to beat him here,” he said.

Kiplangat clocked 15:06:03 for the runners up position while Collins Koros settled for third place in 15:10.8.

Event organiser and AK Nyanza South chairman Peter Angwenyi expressed pleasure in the turnout of athletes.

Angwenyi also pleaded with local County Government to speed up renovations of the Gusii Stadium which have stalled for the last two years.
