New York Cosmos sign former Tusker FC player

The New York Cosmos has announced the signing of former Tusker FC central defender David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng, who agreed to a deal with the American giants on Tuesday 16, 2016.

The Kenyan defender has been training with Kariobangi Sharks after failed trials in Sweden but has now been snapped up by the North American Soccer League (NASL), according to its official website.

“We’re excited to have David here with us for the 2016 season,” said Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese. “He is young and shows great potential. Ochieng is a talented national team player that can come here to enhance our strength in the middle of our defense.”

“When we saw David we felt that he is going to be a very good player for us to bring in. He shows very good qualities and that’s why we felt he is the perfect player for us. Despite his youthful age he shows great maturity in the game and we’re very content that he has decided to join us,” continued Savarese.

Ochieng’ debuted with Kenya’s senior national team in 2012 and has since appeared in qualifying matches for the 2014 and 2018 World Cups. His first FIFA competition cap came on March 23, 2013 against Nigeria, a 1-1 draw in preliminary World Cup qualifying action for Africa.

“Joining the New York Cosmos is a privilege,” Ochieng said. “I know this is a team with great history, and one that now prides itself on a strong defense. I hope to contribute to that reputation through hard work.”

In 2013 Ochieng signed with Al-Taawoun FC of Saudi Arabia’s top flight where he scored two goals in 52 appearances for the club.

The New York Cosmos are reigning champions of NASL, having captured their second league title in three seasons. The terms of the deal with the Kenyan international were however not disclosed, as per the club’s policy.
