Newly elected officials vow to develop basketball in Vihiga

The newly elected Kenya Basketball Federation secretary general of Vihiga County branch, Kenneth Egovwa says the new office has a plan in place to help them achieve their goals in the four-year mandate.

The newly elected officials will be in office from 2021 to 2025.

Speaking after the elections, Egovwa, a teacher by profession and basketball coach of giants Tigoi Girls High School added that they are going to introduce mini basketball for school going kids aged 12yrs and below. This, he argues, will be a feeder programme to groom talents.

“We are going to improve the game standards, enhance capacity of referees and coaches in the county, construct public basketball courts in different townships in the county, and take a team/ teams to the national premier league from the county,” Egovwa said.

The soft-spoken coach says they are also going to open up more opportunities for students playing the sport to obtain basketball scholarship.

The experienced tactician added that they will be banking on the county federation chairman Albert Masiolo, also a teacher, who also doubles up as a Vihiga United Queens vice chairman and the chairman of Vihiga County Sports Board to take the game to the next level, together with other sports in the county.

The national elections are set for January 23.

Apart from Egovwa and Masiolo, other officials elected are; Joseph Sandagi as first vice chairman, Morris Ajega(Second Vice Chairman), Florence Kome(Asst Sec Gen), George Kanai (Treasurer), Zachariah Kabagi(Vice Treasurer), Allan Oduor(Fixtures Secretary) and Isabel Etyang (Asst Fixtures Secretary).

The basketball leagues failed to take place last year thanks to Covid-19 pandemic.
