Ngetich, Chepkemboi out to defend Kisumu City Marathon titles

Silas Ngetich and Maureen Chepkemboi will be look to retain their titles at the 13th edition of the Safaricom Series Kisumu City Marathon to be held on Sunday December 15 in Kisumu County.

Ngetich and Chepkemboi will be competing alongside 348 other participants who have confirmed participation at the event which will cover only 10KM after being reduced from 42 KM by the sponsors in September this year.

The sponsors pumped Sh1 million in to the race, Sh1.5 million short of the usual Sh 2.5 million annual sponsorship.

Joseph Ochieng is the Nyanza North Athletics Kenya (AK) Chairman whom speaking to Citizen Digital the preparation is ready for the race despite the sponsorship being reduced.

“Initially the race used to cover 42km but since the sponsorship was reduced we couldn’t have achieved to cover the full marathon and that’s why we settled with 10km, as it stands now everything is ready for the race, we have identified the places where the athletes will pass through and arranged where the guests will sit.

“I want to confirm that the security is tight, we have talked to the Kisumu count commissioner and he has assured us his support so the participants and fans should not worry at all. Top three winners in both men and women category will walk away with Sh100,000, Sh50,000 and Sh25,000 respectively,” Ochieng  said.

There will also be awards for the athletes who will make it for the top 10. They will be also new categories of races including 8km junior men race, 5km junior women race and 2km for the veterans.

The categories listed above according to the Ochieng will strictly for athletes from Kisumu, Siaya, Homabay and Miori counties as the rest can take part in other races.

The 10km race will start and end at the Milimani Estate in Kisumu.
