Nick Mwendwa grilled by parliamentary committee over CHAN

Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa was on Tuesday grilled by Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee(PAC) on Kenya’s missed chance to host the Africa Nations Championship(CHAN) in 2018 and the funds that were meant for the competition.

Kenya was awarded the rights to host the lower-tier competition but lack of stadia readiness made the continental football body CAF strip Kenya of the hosting rights in Septermber 2017.

In an interview with Citizen Digital, Mwendwa confirmed the grilling, saying it was nothing related to 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Finals but Chan.

The government gave the federation Sh240million to cater for the preparations of the national football team Harambee Stars in the run-up to and during the Afcon competitions.

Said Mwendwa: ” Kulikuwa na maswali ya CHAN, I think they were calling me because they have been summoning the PS and not showing up.

It was nothing related to AFCON. I  don’t procure money for government, I don’t give money to the government, there are  government’s procedures and I don’t think I have anything to shed on it,” he said.

Mwendwa has in the past been grilled by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) over the Afcon expenditure but nothing tangible has materialized out of the investigations.

At the height of it all, Mwendwa and then Sports PS Kirimi Kaberia traded accusations with the latter calling for ‘accountability’ while the federation  chief cried foul, insisting that the PS was frustrating the national team plans.
