Nine debutants feature in the final list of players that will represent the country at the Africa Cup of Nations as released by the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) on Sunday.

Echenje Oliver Obala, Amos Barkibir, Masibo Robert Papa, Munialo Kennedy, Kesekwa Allan, Vincent Othiambo and Wambwire Danstone are the new male faces with Jane Wanjiru and Rachael Wangui the only ladies in line to earn their first caps with the national team.

US-based Kenyan ace Betsi Omalla is out of the country and thus will miss the competition that will run from October 22-29 in Ismailia, Egypt.

KHU chairman Nahashon Randiek confirmed the team that has been in camp for the last 14 weeks received a KSh7.5 million boost ahead of their October 20 departure.

“We’ve had seven friendly matches to boost our preparation and we have worked on our tactical and technical position of the game and we are good to go,” Coach Meshack Senge told Citizen Digital at the City Park after the squad naming.

The national women’s team will open their campaign against champions South Africa before taking on arch-rivals Ghana in their second match. Matches against Nigeria, Zambia and Egypt will then follow.

Their male counterparts face Ghana in their opener before playing Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia with winning teams from the continental showpiece earning tickets for next year’s World Cup.
