No KPL action in the aftermath of repeat election
The Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Limited has postponed the round 31 matches that were set for this weekend, citing unfavorable environment created by the repeat presidential poll on Thursday.
The move will take the season beyond November 18, the date initially set for season-ender matches further affecting players who could be needed for international duties.
In a statement to media houses, KPL asserted the nine matches that were scheduled for Saturday and Sunday will now be played on Tuesday next week.
“Due to the prevailing political situation in the country which has made it made difficult for some teams to travel to various parts of the country to honour matches, KPL has no other choice but to postpone Round 31 matches.
“The nine matches will now be played on November 14 (Tuesday). Round 32 matches, which were to be played on Wednesday, will go on as planned,” read part of the statement.
Thus, KPL intends to engage Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on the season extension, having kicked off late in March due to wrangles that rocked the federation and the league management body on FIFA/CAF Club Licensing Criteria and league’s expansion.
“KPL understands the strain this will have on clubs as the season is set to conclude on Saturday. A request will be made to FKF to surrender the FIFA weekend of 11-12 November for the scheduling of league matches.
“However, this is not guaranteed as FKF had earlier this year stated that they intend to make use of all FIFA dates,” added KPL Limited.
KPL also affirmed its commitment to monitoring the political situation in the country by keeping close contact with the relevant security agencies to ensure safety and welfare of players, technical staff, referees and other stakeholders in the remaining rounds of matches.
Although Gor Mahia has already clinched the 2017 season title, relegation battle between bottom placed Muhoroni Youth, Western Stima, Mtahare United and Thika United continues, and will be decided in the four matches.
