No looking back for Igembe Boys rugby team after 2018 exploits
- Igembe Boys Rugby Sevens head coach Mwenda Laibuta says proper training and discipline were key to their 2018 school games success, saying no looking back after competing in the finals
- Although the team could not go past the nationals, Laibuta who is also the deputy principle of the school underscored the achievement was beyond expectations.
Igembe Boys Rugby Sevens head coach Mwenda Laibuta says proper training and discipline enabled his charges reach the National Secondary School Games for the first time in their history.
Although the team could not go past the nationals, Laibuta who is also the deputy principle of the school underscored the achievement was beyond expectations.
Mwenda also thanked the school leadership for organising and facilitating different tournaments this year noting it helped them in their fine run.
“When the boys came for the nationals they feared the big boys like Laiser Hill and Dagoretti High discovering later and too late that they were just like other teams. The victory over Vihiga (28-0) proves this, but it came when the damage had happened.”
Laibuta who once worked at the Kenya Rugby Union as a senior referee believes his experience came in handy for his team.
The coach also revealed his boys have been benchmarking from regional rivals Kangaru School that has been for long a force to reckon with.
“Kangaru plays a contact game which we evaded and played our own game helping us beat them in the semi finals of the regional games,” he offered.
Having two players who are in form four Laibuta is adamant that his team will dominate in the next year’s edition.
His sentiments were supported by Captain Elias ‘Boi’ Mutharimi who says this year’s exploits are just a beginning of a promising future of the sport in his school.
“Once you have competed at the nationals, your next step should be the East African games which I hope we will soon rule ,” an optimistic Mutharimi charged.
