No Moim and Wacu but Baraza is full of confidence ahead of Championship

Kenya Prisons coach Josp Barasa is confident his current squad has all it takes to challenge for top continental honours despite high profile departures.

Prisons lost national team captain Mercy Moim and setter Jane Wacu to Thailand champions Supreme Club and Anse Royale of Seychelles respectively, just months to the Women’s African Club Championships set for mid this month in Cairo, Egypt.

However during their training at the MISC Kasarani Indoor Arena ahead of the continental showdown, Barasa was high in spirit counting on his troops to take it down to the wire with continental heavyweights like Al Ahly Volleyball Club of Egypt and Tunisia’s Club Africain.

“We have a lot of players. And the pair’s absence has handed other players an opportunity to showcase their ability and to battle for the club. The players who have taken up their slots are doing well in training and I’m very optimistic they will live up to the expectations when we fly out to Egypt,” Barasa oozed with optimism.

Barasa says their main target this year is to defend the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) League title and adding a sixth continental accolade to their name despite the readjustments in personnel.

“We are well strategized to defend the national league title, to play well and win the African Championship. We have previously won the competition and we are hopeful we will do perform well.”

In a bid to assemble a formidable outfit, the tactician has injected some new blood into the club, among them U20 Women’s right attacker and former Lugulu Girls High School player Mercy Ibinza who featured for the national junior side during last year’s African Nation Championship held in Nairobi.

“We have new players who have never featured at the continental level. Pamela Masese did not make it last time, we have Caren Cheruto and Mercy Ibinza, who is a new addition fresh from school,” he revealed.

Prisons are set to jet out on Wednesday next week for the competition which serves off from March 16-20.

Moim who is the national women’s volleyball team captain and 2018 KVF League Most Valuable Player parted ways with defending champions at the start of the year after penning down a five-month deal with Thailand champions, Supreme Club whereas Wacu is back in Seychelles on a one-year-deal for a second stint with former employers Anse Royale (ARSU).
