No reason to let go of top spot, roaring Warriors warn title rivals

After climbing to the summit of the Kenya Hockey Union table, defending champions Butali Sugar Warriors are keen on preserving their top status.

The champions hammered the struggling Strathmore University 7-0 on Sunday to move top of the league standings with nine points from three matches.

Warriors enjoy a superior goal difference compared to Wazalendo, Western Jaguars and Greensharks who also have nine points apiece.

According to head coach Dennis Owoka, Warriors are not seeking to lose the grip on the top spot anytime soon.

“That is where we belong; we want to remain there till the end of the season. Going forward, in every match, we are just looking for three points. Nothing less,” said Owoka.

Meanwhile, former champions Kenya Police registered their first win of the season on Saturday as they edged Western Jaguars 5-3 in a high-scoring match held in Kakamega.

The win for the law enforcers moved them sixth on the 10-team log with four points from their opening three matches after drawing and losing their first and second match against Nairobi Simba and Butali respectively.

In the women’s league, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) earned their first points this season after they held fellow students Kenyatta University (KU) to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

Despite the poor start to the season, JKUAT Coach Tevin Jamine believes her charges will get better with time.

“Yes, we only have a point from three matches; it’s a bad start for us but we are confident we will improve as the season unfolds. You can see the difference; it’s not that big, if we just win a match we will be out of that zone,” said Jamine.

Kenyatta University, on the other hand, are sixth on two points in the four matches they have played thus far, drawing against sliders and losing to Amira Sailors and debutants Lakers in the other fixtures.

Defending champions Telkom are still top of the women’s top division with seven points from  three matches.
