No reforms, no FKF elections, Amukowa insists

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) presidential aspirant Andrew Amukowa has described the newly formed national football governing body’s Electoral Board as illegitimate, questioning the process by which it was constituted.

He also insists that compliance with the 2013 Sports Act is not optional for FKF before the elections are held.

This comes barely less than a month and a half before the FKF national elections are held on March 27, with the nomination process for the County Representatives already underway.

The election board under the chairperson Kentice Tikolo vowed to hold a ‘very open and transparent’ exercise, but Amukowa insists the board was not constituted properly even after the disbanding the initial one following a court order in December last year.

“We have filed a court case to stop the elections until we sit down and agree on the procedures to follow. We have already written to the Sports Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohammed requesting for a meeting with her in an effort to to solve this matter, ” the former FKF Secretary General, Western branch said.

Amukowa is of the view that the elections must be conducted by IEBC (Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission), if a free and fair process is to be achieved.

“Waziri (the CS) said that elections should be held yes within the FIFA timeline but as long as the laid down rules are followed and that is what we want. President Nick Mwendwa has not complied with the Sports Act, and some of the clubs being lined up to vote are non-existent,” claimed Amukowa.

Those who are eying to unseat the current FKF president Mwendwa include former FKF president Sam Nyamweya, former Vihiga County Governor Moses Akaranga, Gor Mahia CEO Lordvick Aduda and the former AFC Leopards chairman Alex Ole Magelo.

World football governing body FIFA wants the elections done before March 30, with the current regime’s tenure already over from February 10 this year.

However, according to the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) ruling that nullified last year’s elections as while disbanding the initial Electoral Board, the Mwendwa team will remain kn office until elections are held.
