No, thank you, I dont need it, Ayimba says of vacant Shujaa job

Decorated tactician Benjamin Ayimba has said he will not be applying for the vacant Shujaa job.

Kenya Rugby Union recently advertised for the position of head coach of the national rugby sevens team, and Ayimba, who had a stellar run with the team, was among those tipped to vie.

However, in an interview with Citizen Digital, Ayimba laid bare his feelings tearing apart the union over what he termed as “mismanagement of the game”.

“I’m not interested in applying for the Shujaa head coach job for the third time because nothing has changed in the union therefore I have no time to work with people who doesn’t have a direction,” he growled

In fact, Ayimba believes that the youthful tactician Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu went beyond the odds and should have not been fired.

“Simiyu led the team to break the one hundred point mark in the HSBC World Rugby Series with 104 points which according to me was a nice performance but later after performing poorly in the Rugby Sevens World Cup in the USA they terminated his contract.

“Just like they did with me in 2016 after winning Singapore Sevens they later said we performed poorly in the Olympics and fired us the same way they’re doing to Simiyu,”Ayimba observed.

Simiyu has had an uneasy relationship with the powers that be at the union, leading to his suspension, before the government intervened to have him back.

Ayimba went ahead to slam the union saying that it doesn’t listen, adding that the ‘Make it Kenya’ saga was just a lame excuse to “fire” because Simiyu as the coach was fighting for his players rights.

But so it seems, the centre could not hold, and before long, after the Rugby Sevens World Cup in the USA, the Richard Omwela led union put out an advertisement for the whole technical bench.

The former Shujaa player said that the team might perform poorly in the series since other teams like South Africa and England are already in the camp unlike Shujaa who are searching for a technical bench.

The new Kenya Sevens season kicks off on October 13 with Africa 7s in Tunisia before hosting Safari 7s on November 10 in Nairobi.

That will be followed by the new World 7s Series season 20 days later.
