NOCK goes digital in kit management, decries financial burden

The National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) has digitized the handling of Nike supplied uniforms and kits to prevent future mismanagement, a situation that was experienced by the committee during the 2016 RIO Olympics.

Speaking at an end of year NOCK media briefing, Committee president Paul Tergat said that they have reworked the office warehousing through digitization for proper inventory management.

“We have done this for the purposes of accountability and records, everything now can be traced and it’s easier to know who has what unlike what it was before,” he said.

He further added that NOCK have changed the kits ordering format, and the order will be originating from the federations and then submitted to Nike, with the 2019 order have already been done under the digitized format.

Several NOCK officials were arrested after the 2016 Rio Olympics saga, with police officers recovering boxes containing athletics shoes, tracksuits and bags from the houses of some of the officials.

The committee’s acting secretary general, Francis Mutuku, revealed that NOCK is facing financial crunch as it owes several entities a debt of over Ksh 800 million, including the contractor of the NOCK Plaza which is under construction, suppliers and consultants.

“Besides the NOCK Plaza building debt, we have an estimate of Ksh. 75 million debts from other elements,” Mutuku confirmed.

In line with this, NOCK says it has engaged and written to federations and the Ministry of Sports sharing their budget plans for next year.

“We need to prepare for the next year’s games and we need to be funded for this,” Tergat averred.

However, the NOCK president maintained he’s committed to ensuring a smooth running of operations ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games adding that his committee will work closely with the athletes.

“At the beginning of next year we will be shifting our focus to the Tokyo Olympics and we will establish an institution that will deliver first to athletes as our number one client,” Tergat affirmed.
