Nock unveil funds committee ahead of Commonwealth Games

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (Nock) Friday unveiled a five-person team that will spearhead their search for corporate sponsors ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Marketing and Fundraising Committee will also oversee the management of Nock funds as the national body strives to bury a past deeply tainted in corruption scandals and gross mismanagement.

Nock President Paul Tergat presided over the exercise flanked by other senior officials including Second Deputy vice-president Waithaka Kioni, Secretary General Francis Kinyili Paul and Deputy Secretary Francis Mutuku.

The five are Caroline Ndungu (Marketing Director Barclays Bank) Emma Miliyo (President Architect Society of Kenya) Donald Kipkorir (Lawyer) Peter Gicheru (IMG Communication) and Mohammed Nyaega (Lawyer).

Tergat placed his faith on the team to deliver and assured participating teams that all finances allocated to them will be accounted for.

“We want a vibrant and open national Olympic body and the support we get from the government and goodwill corporate must be accounted for and nobody should tolerate misuse of funds,” the former World marathon record holder said.

He however stated the Government has yet to fulfill nor communicate over the KSh500 million kitty it had promised ahead of the Games that will be held in Gold, Australia in April 4-15.

“Things have stalled because of the political tensions but hopefully next year we will make an announcement,” he said.

Tergat issued a stern warning to the new administration that rose to office in September that there will be dire consequences should they be found guilty of mismanaging funds.

“Let us be men and women of integrity and ethics, corruption and mismanagement of funds will not be tolerated at all, and if by any chance it happens, you will have to down your tools and face the law.

The Marketing committee is expected to meet in a week’s time to select their chairperson and his/her deputy as well as chat a way forward.

Speaking on behalf of the new committee Mr. Mohammed Nyaoka assured they will put in place good governance systems that will be accountable to stake holders.

“We are going out there for a specific objective and we must attain that goal, but despite attaining the goal we must be accountable to every coin that shall be used.”
