Not again! Stung FKF vows not to offer coaches closed contacts

Stung by the waves of legal suits that have nearly crippled its operations, Football Kenya Federation has moved with speed to put austerity measures in place, aimed at safeguarding its financial life.

Part of the measures, according to Chief Executive Officer Barry Otieno, is banning the appointment of coaches – of all groups — on closed contracts.

Speaking to Citizen Digital at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Barry said the federation, in future, do not wish to be caught in the current mess.

On Sunday, the International Court of Arbitration for Sports ordered the broke federation to pay former Harambee Stars coach Adel Amrouche a staggering Sh108 million in the next 26 days for wrongful dismissal.

The ruling is seen as a hit below the belt for an association that is struggling to raise funds to run its activities.

Amrouche was sacked after Kenya was bundled out of the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, following a humiliating 1-0 aggregate defeat to minnows Lesotho.

“In the past we have not been handling contract issues with the coaches well, and as a federation we have decided no coach will have a closed contract, it will be open whereby if we want to terminate the deal we just pay two months’ salary, that begins with Kimanzi ,” said Otieno.

Apart from the orders to pay Amrouche his dues, the Nick Mwendwa led federation has sought to settle the case of former Stars coach, Scotsman Bobby Williamson, in an out-of-court arrangement following his dismissal in 2016 but no settlement has been reached.

“We owe Bobby Sh55 m, Henri Michel (late Frenchman) Sh45m and now Amrouche Sh108 million. We signed none of them, and it’s a sorry state for us considering we inherited the problems,”added Barry.

FKF has been given 30 days beginning October 1 to pay Amrouche or risk being locked out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“We have written to the government asking for help, with hope they will respond before the deadline.

“As a federation we have no money, we are trying to speak to several sponsors to try and get help

Fifa are very clear on the deadline day and we have received an invoice from Adel so that’s the state we are in as Federation,” he concluded.
