Nyairera stars as Thika AK meet comes to a close

The third Athletics Kenya (AK) weekend meeting ended on a high note as locals thronged the Thika Municipality stadium, Kiambu County to catch a glimpse of athletes as they took to the turf.
Star attractions of the event included Rio Olympics 800m bronze medalist Margaret Nyairera and the relays which kept athletics enthusiasts glued on the action.
“I came to test my speed ahead of Doha Diamond League.  This will enable me to know what speed to pass with at the 400m mark. I have also improved on my speed which is fantastic for me. My focus now shifts to Doha,” Nyairera said in her post race interview.
She stopped the timer at  52.4,  shaving off 20 seconds from her African Championships results to take top podium place at the women’s 400m event. Nevian Michira (55.0) and Miriam Chepkemboi (55.4) tried to close the huge gap between them and Nyairera but settled for second and third places.
In Doha, she will face stiff competition from two-time Olympics and two-time World champion Caster Semenya  and Burundian Francine Niyonsaba – an Olympics silver medalist but her sights will also be set on the forthcoming IAAF World Athletics Championships in London (August 3-13).
“The 800m line up in Doha does not startle me, only God knows the outcome. I have prepared myself well. In Beijing championships I was in experienced and I had not mastered my training and techniques well. I hope this time round in London I will post better performance in London,” the former world indoor bronze medalist added.

Meanwhile in the men’s 5,000m race, Peter Ndeegwa took top podium place in 13:39.9 after clocking the fastest time in his heat. Douglas Kipserem came overall second in 13:40.4 while Frederick Muranga finished third in 13:42.9.

However, 17-year-old Stanely Waithaka stole the show after stunning seniors in his heat to take first place in 13:57.5.
Waithaka, a form four student from Raichiri Secondary school in Nyahururu opted to compete in the event under the advisory of veteran junior athletes’ coach Francis Kamau.
“My target is to represent Kenya at the IAAF World U18 Championships in July but in the 3000m. They did not have our event so coached asked me to race 5,000m for endurance,” Waithaka said.
Though the Nakuru (May 5&6) and Kisii (May 12&13) weekend meetings  were postponed due to the forthcoming AK elections, Waithaka maintained he looks forward to the May 5 youth trials.
