Nyamira Starlets face womens premier league axe

Nyamira Starlets are staring at expulsion from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women’s Premier League unless they can secure funds to honour their fixtures soon.

The only ladies team from the expansive Nyanza region has already given two walkovers and were in line to be axed from the top-flight last weekend but the federation gave them temporary reprieve to source for money.

It took the efforts of the club chairman; George Ongubo to plead with the governing body not disqualify them and promised after pledging they would do their best to play the remaining games.

“Head coach Omandi Marwanga and I had to travel to Nairobi and we had a meeting at Kasarani which saved the team because our club was initially omitted from the league fixtures,” Ongubo revealed.

FKF also accepted their request to have their next two games played at their home ground in Sironga to cut the costs as they strive to get more funding.

At first, the Nyamira County Government had promised to facilitate the team since they hail from the region but Governor John Nyangarama’s administration is yet to honour the pledge.

“I called the Governor and he said he had no clue of what we have been going through but promised that our welfare would be taken care of.

“I informed him we have only received Ksh25,000 from his Sports Ministry and he acknowledged the sum was not enough and directed the docket to provide further assistance,” the chairman underscored.

The Chief Officer in the Ministry, Arnest Morara said it was hard to realise more cash since the financial year was closed.

“Nyamira Starlets is a private entity and we were chipping in to help where we can. We will only talk of assistance from September when the Ministry will get money for the next financial year,” he added.

Nyamira Starlets Formally Bogichora United was promoted to the topflight from Division one zone B.

The team follows the cash woes afflicting former top flight giants, Shabana FC who hail from the larger Gusii region who have the threat of expulsion from the second tier National Super League hanging over their heads after aborting two fixtures.
