Nyamweya rallies ex-internationals to embrace Sports Foundation

Former Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya has termed the newly formed Sports Stars Foundation a ‘big blessing’ to Kenya’s sports.

The Sports Fund Foundation(SFF) is an initiative of ex- Kenyan internationals footballers in collaboration with former football chief whose aim is empowering sportsmen after their active years in sports.

The foundation which is open to all sportsmen across all disciplines is mooting a grand plan of forming a Savings and Credit Association (SACCO) in future to financially help the sportsmen.

“One of the main objectives of the foundation is to empower sportsmen after their active years in sports. Some young sportsmen don’t know what to do in preparation for latter years, and from experience, it has not been easy to some of the former stars who had no opportunity to prepare for life outside the stadia.

“We can now bridge these gaps using this foundation,” Nyamweya said.

European Football Association advisor Dr Michael Hopkins, a global popular CSR advocate is expected to get the foundation moving financially, while Mathare Youth Sports Association founder Bob Munro will sit in the board as one of the advisors.

According to Nyamweya, several former football players who came up with the idea were concerned with among other issues, poverty among footballers.

He also noted the ex-stars will reach out to all willing local sports stakeholders, in a bid to promote sports culture in the country.

“The foundation will work towards making sports an income generating venture by encouraging youngsters in schools to venture into different sports disciplines. They will also approach the government to create an environment where sports can grow by setting up infrastructures in all corners of the republic.

As role models in the society, they will also work closely with federations, clubs, Olympians and other sports stakeholders to build a sporting culture and make Kenya a sporting tourism hub,” Nyamweya offered.
