Nyandarua County sweeps the deck at Central Region games

The curtains came down on Central Kenya region school games Saturday with Nyandura County dominating in the athletics event.

The county which swept 10 medals came out tops in 100m, 4×100, 4x400m as well as in 4x100m hurdles in both girls and boys categories.

The county team coordinator Kamau Karimi attributed the impressive performance to good preparations.

“We had proper understanding amongst ourselves, we trained as a team in every discipline and came here as a team and not as individual schools,” said Kamau.

Nyeri County which came out second in athletics after bagging runners up slots in 100m,4x100m girls , 3,000m steeplechase boys and 2,000m steeplechase girls said things didn’t fall into place hence failing to defend the title.

‘We came here as the defending champions. We knew we needed to be at our best but our competitors had a better plan than us,”Pius Karimi, the county’s sports coordinator said.

In 1,500m finals,  Nyandarua dominated bagging the first and third slots in the girls final and the number one position in the boys category.

Kiambu, Muranga and Kirinyaga were the last three in that order in athletics.

Speaking after the closure of the event, Central Region school games coordinator Francis Wanjohi said they hoped for a far better event next term at the term two games, adding that focus on registering better results in the national finals to be staged in Mombasa later next month is a top priority.
