Nyanza Region vows to shine at National School Games

With the dust yet to settle after they were crowned champions, the Lake region top guns have changed the focus to the national school games set for Shimo La Tewa School in Mombasa next month.

Ahead of kickoff slated for 6-12th April, the Nyanza champions have fired a warning to their rivals that they will not be also-rans in the week-long affair.

This year’s Lake region term one games held at Homa Bay High School culminated Wednesday with regional powerhouses like Kanyawanga (handball boys), Barchando (basketball girls) and Sega (handball girls) defending their titles.

Also, traditional behemoths were floored paving way for new champions like Agoro Sare (rugby 7s), Maseno School (rugby 15s), Nyamira Girls (girls’ hockey) Homa Bay High School (boys’ hockey) and Agoro Sare (boys’ basketball) to emerge.

It’s a fortnight before the national games kick off at Shimo la Tewa High School.

Agoro Sare captain Edward Sokoine is positive of a successful campaign saying they will stick by their guns.

“We’ll stick to our traditions, basics and put more shift than our opponents. As our spirit is always we’ll work even harder than before to ensure that we come out on top.

Our aim always is to stay true to our spirit.” He added.

For the new basketball champions Agoro Sare Coach Paul Odok, the national games will provide a perfect platform for his players to soar even higher.

“We are targeting to qualify for the East Africa Games for the first time and probably dominate Kenyan secondary school basketball in future.”

Girls basketball champions Barchando Coach Harmon Omondi is upbeat on his team going all the way, but has urged his team to finish first to be safer when pooling is done.

“We are hopeful that we don’t end up second because of the pooling.

Our main agenda will be to qualify for the semi-finals ranked first because from there I think we will not have many problems.”

His team will come up against opponents from rift valley and western, and he feels his girls are up to the challenge.

“We are aware of our potential opponents and we will train hard to overcome everything they will throw our way.

My players are disciplined and are sure they do the Nyanza region proud.”

Nyanza Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) chairperson Moses Adala has urged the teams representing the region to go one better in this year’s editions having finished runners up last year.

The national secondary school games will be held at Shimo la Tewa High School from 6th through 12th April this year.
