Nzoia continue NSL title push against struggling Shabana

National Super League (NSL) action resumes on Saturday after a one week break that paved way for the GOtv Shield round of 16.

The top two clubs – Nzoia United FC and Nakumatt FC – are on course to cementing Kenyan Premier League (KPL) qualification spots, taking commanding leads with 17 rounds to go with each at least six points clear of their nearest rivals.

Nzoia will have a chance to further extend that lead as they travel to the Awendo Green Stadium to face bottom-placed Shabana FC.

Despite a string of poor results that has seen Shabana collect a disappointing four points from their last six league matches, Team Manager, Andrew Kanuli is adamant it is not yet too late to turn the tables around and avoid relegation come the end of the season.

“Last time we played Nzoia we played very well and the fact that we lost 1-0 courtesy of a controversial penalty should attest to that. Several problems among them financial constraints have really curtailed our performances this season. The players lack motivation but they have shown that even in the midst of all these problems they are capable of minting positive results,” Kanuli told Citizen Digital.

“Our target remains avoiding the drop this season and with our current position it’s obvious why we’re treating each match seriously; we know how valuable each point is going to be at the end of our campaign,” he added.

However, the odds look stacked against the side that has only won two league matches out of 20 this far. Their form is a sharp contrast to that of their weekend opponents who have not lost a single match in over ten, drawing twice and winning eight – including a 1-0 win over KPL champions Gor Mahia in the GOtv Shield Cup on Sunday.

“We don’t under-estimate anyone. We take every game seriously and so as we travel we will be looking to collect maximum points. The boys are full of confidence and after a successful week’s training, I think we are ready for the game,” Nzoia Team Manager, Yapets Mokua declared.

Fourth-placed Zoo Kericho FC will be hosting 16th-placed Modern Coast Rangers at the Kericho Green Stadium as they look to close in on the margin of four goals that separates them and Vihiga United. The two teams are joint third on points (39) and hope to keep their dreams of earning a promotion alive with a win.

Nakumatt, who look like the only club that could challenge Nzoia to the title, host Kisumu’s Palos FC.
