Nzoia edge struggling All Stars, Wazito downed

Nzoia Sugar climbed up into third on the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) standings after picking only their first win of the season by edging Kisumu All Stars 2-0 at Kisumu’s Moi Stadium on Saturday.

Leonard Kasembeli and Collins Wakhungu scored either side of half time as the visitors picked up all three points, condemning All Stars to their second defeat after three rounds in a run that leaves them second from bottom.

At the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, AFC Leopards collected maximum points for the first time this season after defeating Wazito FC 1-0 thanks to John Makwatta’s second half penalty.

In the matchday’s early kick-off, Clifford Alwanga’s late strike gave Mathare United a 2-1 win over Ulinzi Stars at the Kasarani Stadium. George Owino own goal had put Mathare 1-0 up before Daniel Waweru made it 1-1 and Alwanga had the final say with minutes left on the clock.

All Stars and Nzoia started their encounter with much intent, trading some end to end action in Kisumu.

Nzoia’s best chance of the opening stanza came in the 5th minute when Kasembeli converted Wakhungu’s cross gifting the Sudi-based Millers an early lead.

All Stars squandered a host of chances with the best coming in the 23rd minute when Geofrey Kemboi shot from point-blank range after being supplied by Victor Oduor but his effort was saved by Hamprey Katasi.

The National Super League runners up came into the second half guns blazing but Collins Wakhungu was on target just two minutes into the second half making it 2-0.

All Stars seek to redeem themselves when they face Western Stima while Nzoia next face Gor Mahia with both games scheduled for next week.
