Odera bags a brace as Leopards claw Chemelil

Ezekiel Odera scored twice as AFC Leopards beat Chemelil Sugar 2-0 at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on Saturday.

Elsewhere, at the Camp Toyoyo grounds,  Vihiga United held Mathare United to a one-all-draw.

Ahmed Ahmad put Mathare ahead in the sixth minute before visiting Vihiga levelled in the 49th minute through Dennis Wafula.

Vihiga head coach Manoah said he was pleased with the point, praising his boys’ performance, pointing out that playing Mathare away from home was no easy task.

“It’s a point. I’m happy because we had lost our three matches prior to this and there are some positives we can take from this match.”

Mathare’s assistant coach Salim Ali, who saw his side register back- to -back draws said it is hard to accept the outcome.

“We came into the match with the aim of getting a win but this is football, we have to take the point,”said Ali.

In Machakos, Odera who was making his return to the starting line-up after shrugging off a short illness scored twice in the second half to hand Ingwe the win. Odera opened his account in the 74th minute with a clinical header from a long throw by Moses Mburu, and added his second from the spot in the 89th minute.

The victory hauled Leopards points tally to 31, jumping to position three on the log, behind second placed Mathare United on 33 points and leaders Gor Mahia on 37.

Chemelil defenders could not contain the pressure from Ingwe’s relentless attacks conceding a penalty in stoppage time, and the spot-on Odera made no mistake with the chance.

For coach Rodolfo Zapata, his second half-decision to bring on Odera turned out to be the magic his team needed after struggling to break down the stubborn sugar millers in the first half.

Chemelil remain 12th on the log position on 20 points with Nakumatt on 13th with the same points, though they are yet to play their weekend fixture.

At the Green Stadium in Kericho, Enock Agwanda rescued a point for lowly placed Sony Sugar in a 1-1 draw with Zoo. The former Gor Mahia player leveled the tie minutes after an Isaac Kipyegon penalty handed Zoo the lead.

Both Zoo and Sony climb up with only one spot to 14th and 16th respectively.
