Oduor Gangla succeeds Omwela as KRU chairman

Oduor Gangla is the new Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman after he won Wednesday’s vote that will see him lead the national organisation over the next four years.

Gangla secured 33 votes ahead of former KRU vice-chairman Sasha Mutai (20) and former KCB RFC chairman Asiko Owiro who scored only two at the Annual General Meeting.

Mutai lost 25-23 to outgoing chairman Richard Omwela in 2016 while the ascension of Oduor – who served as the Hon. Secretary – means the role will be left vacant and the new board has to hold a meeting to chart a way forward.

Gangla was the former Impala Saracens chairman before he got his Hon secretary seat.

The AGM meeting had earlier on been cancelled by the Ministry of Sports before a KRU board meeting resolved it would proceed as per the Union’s constitution.

Oscar Mango (director), Hillary Itela (director), Thomas Opiyo (vice-chairman) and Joshua Aroni (treasurer) will continue to hold office in their roles until 2022 as per the new Constitution passed in 2018 that secured four-year terms.

Ian Mugambi, Ezekiel Owuor, Ray Olendo (retained his position) and Moses Ndale were elected to join the four as the new directors.
