Ogalo itching to represent Kenya at Tokyo Olympics

Faith Ogalo says she is more than ready to fly the country’s flag at the Summer Olympics set for Tokyo Japan.

This is the second time Kenya will be represented in Taekwondo at the Games, after the late Dickson Wamwiri and Milka Akinyi represented the country at the Olympic Games way back in 2008 and Ogalo, 27, says she is relishing the challenge that comes with the opportunity.

“In collaboration with other stakeholders, the taekwondo federation, my team mates and fans I’m now strong to go. I’m not worried anymore,” she said. “The postponement of the Olympic Games was worthy because the pandemic hit the whole world and health is important and now in Japan they have really tried to put in place the necessary protocols. As athletes we are doing our best (to be ready for the Games),” said Ogallo who is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work at Kibabii University.

Though her preparations have been disrupted by the pandemic, Ogalo has adopted individual training in order to keep in shape.

Meanwhile the Kenya Taekwondo Federation secretary general George Wesonga says they are leaving nothing to chance to ensure Ogalo gets the ideal preparations as they target a podium place in Tokyo.

“We are working hand in hand with the National Olympic Committee. They are very concerned and committed in ensuring that Faith gets the best preparation. Right now she is on a taekwondo scholarship which is being paid for by NOC-K.

“She is an ambassador for her gender and if she wins it will be a big boost for the female gender. We are hoping for gold and that is what we are preparing for, but any medal is welcome, silver or bronze; it will be a great achievement because we have never gotten any medal at the Olympics,” said Wesonga.
