Okoth, Gicharu earn tickets to Commonwealth Games
Olympian Nick Okoth and Benson Gicharu have made it to the team of boxers who will represent Kenya at the Commonwealth Games set for Gold Coast, Australia, from April 4-15.
Gicharu won the Bantamweight final beating Isaac Meja 3-0 at the Kaloleni Social Hall, as the curtains came down on the two-day trials on Saturday.
Joining the duo is Edwin Okoth of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) who out-punched Erick Tengo of Prisons 3-0 to claim the Middleweight ticket.
The Super bantamweight ticket was claimed by Fredrick Ramogi, also of KDF, after he overpowered David Njuguna of Police.
At the same time, the Boxing Association of Kenya president John Kameta has said that the final squad will be named on Wednesday.
“I will sit down with the technical bench and come up with the final squad for the Commonwealth Games. We will drop some categories to remain with seven for men and possibly three for ladies. Kenya has been given 10 slots for both gender so we will sit down and see which weight categories to drop,” Kameta told Citizen Digital shortly after the afternoon bouts in Kaloleni
