Okumbi impressed by team development after Sudan win

Kenya under-20 team head coach Stanley Okumbi says he is impressed by the development of his side ahead of the upcoming CECAFA Under 20 Championship that will take place between November 22, and December 6, 2020, in Arusha, Tanzania.

The Rising Stars stepped up preparations for the tournament with a 3-1 win over Sudan on Monday, at the MISC Kasarani, Sellasie Otieno, Reagan Ronald and Matthew Mwendwa  scoring for the home side.

“Sudan is a very strong team considering we are also trying to build a new team. The team that we went with for CECAFA last year, most of the players are have been promoted so we are trying to come up with a new team which I am happy with the progress,” he said.

The Rising Stars will face the same opposition in another friendly on Thursday, at the same venue, before they leave for the tournament. The Rising Stars have been pooled in Group C of the tournament alongside Ethiopia and Sudan.

“We need to promote our players. If a player was with the Under-17 last season, he needs to play for Under-20 this year, that will show progress and development of talent which I can see  is happening,” he added.

The top teams in each of the three groups will proceed to the tournament’s semi-finals, alongside one best runner-up. The finalists, meanwhile, are set to earn an automatic slot at the Africa U20 Cup of Nations.
