Omwela tips special KCB to retain Kenya Cup title

Kenyan Rugby Union (KRU) Chairman Richard Omwela has tipped Kenya Cup champions KCB RFC to hold on to their crown despite dogged competition from their assailants.

Omwela termed KCB’s squad a ‘special group’ worth watching in the latest of tributes the runaway leaders have attracted thanks to barnstorming start to the 2018 campaign.

The Bankers have won all nine of their fixtures this season and have already secured a place in the Top Six playoffs with two rounds left to spare before the end of the regular league phase.

“I tip KCB to lift the title again, they are a formidable team that is hungry for more achievements. I think other top teams should borrow a leaf from them,” Omwela told Citizen Digital.

KCB who are yet to taste defeat lead the 12-team log and set for a mouth-watering clash against third-placed Kabras Sugar RFC with whom they are twinned in the pursuit for the Kenya Cup title.

The KRU chief was also impressed with the overall growth of the Kenya Cup expressing his satisfaction at the steady rise of youthful teams.

“Last week big boys Mwamba lost to Kisii RFC and that’s a shocker but for me this shows the growth of our local league and how far it has come. It can only get better for everyone,” Omwela added.

Newbies Kisii who have endured a woeful start to life in the top flight claimed the upset of Round Eight Kenya Cup action when they downed the seasoned Mwamba RFC 18-12.

Strathmore versus Kisii, the only fixture that had been postponed owing to a venue glitch,  will be played over the weekend as other teams take a break ahead of the Kenya Cup homestretch.

The Nationwide and Championship leagues will proceed as scheduled with a number of games lined up across the country.
