Orange streamroll Heartland to reach championship finals

Titleholders Telkom Orange sailed through to the finals of the African Club Hockey Championships with a magnificent 7-0 win over Nigeria’s Heartland in a match played at the Nairobi City Park Stadium on Friday.

Free-scoring striker Jacqueline Wangechi was in unstoppable form, grabbing a delightful hat-trick – and her fifth goal in two matches – to hand cruise control to the eight-time African champions on their way to a dominant win.

Audrey Omaido who was the only other scorer alongside Wangechi when they trounced Kenya Sliders 4-0 on Thursday was also on target for the 19-time national women’s league champions with Betsy Ommala’s goal and a late Lilian Aura brace sealing the victory.

“We’re only one win away from our ninth title and also our fifth in a row and seeing the kind of performance the ladies have shown here today is a source of confidence for us. It’s now up to ourselves to maintain our focus,” Orange Coach Jos Openda told Citizen Digital.

Openda and her charges now await the winner of the other semi-final clash between Ghana Revenue Authority and Nigeria’s Kada Queens ahead of the finals showdown on Sunday.
