Oscar Ayodi emerges top try scorer at Sydney Sevens

Oscar Ayodi emerged joint top try scorer at the Sydney Sevens World Rugby tournament held over the weekend.

Ayodi tied with Nathan Hirayama (Canada), Rieko Ioane (New Zealand), Savenaca Rwaca (Fiji) and Seabelo Senatla (South Africa) with seven tries in the tournament.

The Kenya Sevens team put up a stellar performance at the event, romping to the Plate final after coming down at half time to beat USA 24-21 in the Plate Semis of the Sydney Sevens in Australia on Sunday morning.

Oscar Ayodi scored his 30th career try before Strathmore’s Billy Odhiambo made it 10-21 after the restart with Biko Adema making the conversion.

Captain Andrew Amonde brought the score to almost level with the control he commanded in USA’s 22 before Bush Mwale’s final try gave Kenya a comeback drubbed to be ‘better than the Beatles’.

Collins Injera is currently Kenya’s top all time Sevens Series with a total of 214 tries.

Kenya Sevens, however, failed to past Argentina in the plate final goiig down 5-0 at half time and a heavy 24-0 at the final whistle.

Nicolas Menendez opened the scoring in the 4th minute before Axel Muller added the second in the 9th minute. Bautizta Escurra missed two conversions in the first half of the match but redeemed himself in the second, converting after Argentina’s 12th minute penalty try. Juan Cruz Gonzalez and Franco Sabato made a conversion and a try, respectively, to hand Argentina the title.

The main cup was won by New Zealand who beat Australia 27-14 in a magical comeback similar to their victory at the Wellington Sevens last weekend.
