Otangas late penalty spoils the party for Homeboyz

Substitute Derrick Otanga scored a last-gasp goal as Wazito rallied from behind to steal a point in a dramatic 1-1 draw with host club Kakamega Homeboyz at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

Christopher Masinza headed home Allan Wanga’s cross in the 53rd minute to put the home side ahead but Otanga had other ideas leveling late, late in the game.

With Homeboyz dominating and pushing for a winner, they were caught on a counter attack with Augustine Otu fouling Whyvonne Isuza in the box to win a penalty.

Otanga, entrusted with the penalty taking duty stepped forward, held his nerves and kept the focus to send keeper Geoffrey Oputi the wrong way to restore parity for the moneybags.

Homeboyz were the much better side at Bukhungu Stadium but Wazito defended with all their lives, Dennis Shikayi and Omurwa Johnstone forming a rock solid partnership in defence to keep Allan Wanga and Masinza at bay.

Wazito’s first shot on target after the breather came in the 69th minute, also from a counter attack but Otu saw his shot punched away by custodian Oputi who had a quiet afternoon overall.

Dennis Ng’anga almost scored an own goal, failing to master Wanga’s cross, and the former KCB man headed the ball few centimetres into his own goal for a corner.

Stewart Hall’s tactics however finally paid off, directing his side to sit back and allow the home to dominate the proceedings but use Isuza and danger man Otu to lead the counter attacks whenever they had the ball.

Despite the draw, Homeboyz head coach Nicholas Muyoti believes his side are still in the title race and are training their eyes in the next assignment, a weekend date in Mombasa with Twahir Muhiddin’s  Bandari .

Wazito who are fighting for their KPL survival host Western Stima before a trip to Ruaraka grounds to take on Tusker FC.
