Oumas Starlets aiming higher after caging Crested Cranes

Harambee Starlets head coach David Ouma has challenged his team to be more aggressive in goal poaching  if they are to get better of Equatorial Guinea, in the African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers second round.

Starlets sailed through to the second round after holding Uganda to a barren draw in the return leg played in Kampala on Sunday, to progress with a 1-0 aggregate.

Ouma’s charges had picked a 1-0 win in Machakos on Wednesday last week, and only needed to avoid defeat at the Lugogo Stadium to advance.

“We have to improve  our attacking force, we were not lethal in front of goal in both legs. We wasted the few opportunities that we had, so heading forward this is an area we need to work on.

“They (Uganda) were physically better than us because their league started earlier than ours.  We will lay emphasis in the space we have now before playing Equatorial Guinea in June,” said Ouma, a former Sofapaka FC coach.

Kenya will host the first leg on June 2, with the reverse tie a week later taking place in the Western African nation. Cruising past Guinea will see them book a second straight appearance to the continental showpiece, slated for November 17 to December 1 in Ghana.

“Sometimes teams start slowly in the qualifying stages but the most important thing is how you improve in the next games. As a team we want to take one game at a time,” added Ouma.

Kenya made a maiden appearance at the 2016 showpiece in Cameroon, bowing out in the first round at the hands of Ghana, Mali, and Nigeria; something Ouma will try to avoid.

“Our aim is to go past the group stage this time round in AWCON, but that can only happen if we first qualify,” Ouma told Citizen Digital.
