Ouna banking on Wazitos weight for dream start to KPL

After roping in three new players in the current transfer period, Wazito head coach Frank Ouna is optimistic his squad will match the regular topflight sides when the 2018 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) kicks off.

The newly promoted side had already acquired AFC Leopards duo Ibrahim Mao and central midfielder Harun Nyaka, and Francis Ocholla from Sofapaka.

Speaking to the Citizen Digital, Ouna revealed the club is still eyeing more players before the closure of the transfer window.

“We have lost many players who have concentrated with their professional careers. As you know Wazito is mainly composed of University students, so we will have a busy January even after acquiring the three players in order to replace those who have gone,” Ouna averred.

The former Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia assistant coach noted their debut season will be important in cementing a place in the top tier, underscoring it is their major target.

“This season we are not looking forward to win the league but to remain in it.  We don’t want to put ourselves under pressure and once we survive in the first season, we can start thinking about lifting the trophy in the subsequent seasons,” Ouna added.

The Nairobi based club has also strengthened their technical bench ahead of the new season bringing on board former Gor Mahia goalkeeper trainer Abdul Iddi Salim and former Modern Coast Rangers coach Ahmed Mohammed, at the capacity of the first-team coach.

Wazito thumped Kenya Police 5-2 at the Narok County Stadium in the 2017 season finale of their National Super League (NSL) matches to finish second with 80 points, level with champions Vihiga United who clinched the title on goal difference.
