Outstanding schools nominated for Soya awards

Nine girls’ schools have been nominated to fight for the Girls School of the Year award at the 2018 edition of the Sports Personality of the Year (SOYA) awards slated for January 11 at Fort Jesus, Mombasa.

The list is predominantly made of schools that competed at the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One Games before proceeding to the Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games in Musanze, Rwanda.

Among the schools in the list are the national and East Africa champions in hockey Trans Nzoia Mixed, Kaya Tiwi Girls, who are the national champions in both basketball and netball as well as bronze medalists in regional games in basketball.

Volleyball giants Kwanthanze Secondary School who are also the national and East Africa champions also made the cut same as Kwale High School who won their maiden national title in football before once again reigning supreme in Rwanda.

Moi Girls Kamusinga who captured the handball national title before settling for silver in Rwanda is also in the list alongside St. Anne’s Sega who finished as runners up behind the former at the nationals before claiming bronze at the East Africa games.

Completing the entry are Tigoi Girls, Butere High as well as Nairobi’s Soweto Academy.

For the first time since its inception in 2004 the ceremony will be held out of capital Nairobi with the iconic Fort Jesus in Mombasa county set to play host to the gala.
