Over 2000 sign up for Ndakaini Half Marathon

Over 2000 athletes have registered for 16th edition of Ndakaini half marathon slated for Saturday at the Ndakaini Dam in Muranga County.

According to the race chairman, James Mukuna, the drop in participation figures is partly attributed to the withdrawal of sponsors and prize money as a result.

Mukuna is however hopeful the number could hit 2500 athletes tomorrow.

“We have recorded low turnout because  for the second time there is no prize money for the winners. This brings the morale of the marathon down but we are hopeful that next year we are going to have more sponsors  so that we can drive Ndakaini marathon forward together”, Mukuna said.

Royal Media Services Ltd is the main sponsor of the annual event with Barclays Bank partnering the leading media company as kit providers.

The marathon’s main purpose is to raise funds toward conserving Dam’s catchment area together with nurturing talents as far as athletics is concerned.

“Managers get an opportunity of scouting new talents from the event so it is very important for the athletes to sign up for this marathon,” Mukuna added.

Tomorrow’s event will include 21km, 10km and 5km family fun race for both men and women.
