Over 40 teams up for Meru Open tournament

Over 40 teams have confirmed their participation at the 2019 Meru Open tournament ahead of the weekend kickoff in Meru School, Meru County.

Teams drawn from institutions across Eastern region will battle for glory in rugby, chess, handball, volleyball, football, netball and hockey competitions.

The tournament is meant to help teams sharpen their preparations for the School Games which will begin at sub-county levels in the opening week of March.

Last year’s title-winners including Kerugoya Girls (hockey) Kirigara Girls (basketball) and Meru School (hockey & basketball) are among teams that will be defending their crowns.

This year’s edition is themed on mentorship with organisers keen to inspire students from ‘Meru County and beyond’ into pursuing sports scholarships with top Universities such as Strathmore, USIU and Kenyatta.

“This year’s tourney is aimed to mentor more students from Meru County and beyond to join others who got their scholarship to study sports in our universities,’’ Nathan Kiprop, the Meru Open tournament coordinator, said.
