Pain for TUK, hope for Wazalendo as hockey league winds down

After missing out on the top-flight league last season, Wazalendo Masters has a chance to replace Technical University of Kenya (TUK) who have been axed from Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Men Premier League.

Masters currently lead in the National League pool A on 31 points, same with Impala but with a game in hand ahead of their final showdown of the season against Mombasa Sports Club slated for December 17.

If they beat MSC, they will take their tally to 34 points, which would guarantee them the top spot and a playoff berth with second placed team in National League pool ‘B’ in order to secure a place in the top-flight.

In an interview with Citizen Digital, Wazalendo Masters head coach Wycliffe Ongori said that he’s upbeat his side will finish top.

“We are training hard, and we are working on our strategy to get the strike and I believe we will finish first,” he said.

The coach is however not pleased with TUK’s catastrophic performance, “We are not happy that TUK did not remain in the league, we expected them to give a stellar performance despite being debutants,” Ongori added.

With their relegation, TUK steps back to the second division as the  curtains fall on the 2017 KHU Men Premier League season.

The spectacular drop to the National League came after their 7-0 humiliation in the hands of league leaders, Kenya Police, at a match played at City Park on Tuesday.

The Varsity outfit who made their debut to the Premier League this season have garnered only 8 points from 24 outings, with only four matches remaining to the end of the campaign.

The students have won only one match, registering five draws and a mind blowing 18 losses.Even if they win their upcoming four games, the best they can achieve is 20 points .
