Pinto walks in, sets CAF target for Gor

Barely a day after taking over the hot seat at Gor Mahia, new head coach Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto has laid down the marker saying the club must perform to expectations in Africa.

Portuguese Pintos says his main target is to help the club get to the group stages of the CAF confederation.

Pinto got a rude shock when he watched from the terrace as Kariobangi Sharks showed little respect to Gor mauling the latter 4-3 on Sunday in a league match and he clearly understands the weight of the task at hand.

On the continent he faces intense 180 minutes – home and away- against Napsa Stars of Zambia if he’s to realize the group stage ticket where some Sh33milion lies in wait for the aggregate winner of the two-leg clash.

The monies arre meant to aid the teams in their preparations and logistics for the competition.

Gor will face Zambia side on February 14 at home with the rematch primed for Lusaka seven days later

After back to back appearances in the group stages of the continent’s second-tier club competition – in 2018 and 2019 – Gor exited at the playoff stage last year after losing 3-2 to DC Motema Pembe of Democratic Republic of Congo.

“We have enough time to analyse our opponents and put the focus in building our team in order to be in the right state of mind and shape ahead of the clash next month.

Our first target is to reach the Confederations Cup group stages and that will require hard work for the staff and players, it’s a two-leg and we must focus to get the best results for both legs,” said Pinto.

Pinto also insisted on the importance of getting good results in the league having seen his side lose 4-3 to Kariobangi Sharks in a league match played at the Moi international Sports Centre Kasarani.

“I want to make history with this great club, we have  a plan to make sure that  we achieve a lot together with this wonderful group of players. I believe we have what it takes to go far in the Confederations Cup,” added the tactician.

The defending champions are currently 16th on the log.
