Police FC to feature in Community Peace Cup

Kenyan Premier League newbies Police FC will feature in the Community Peace Cup to be staged at Gatina Primary School in Kawangware on Saturday.

Other teams in the tournament dubbed “Shaping Peace Together,” include Escalators FC, Water Works and Team Red, bringing together the police and civilians.

Community Relations Executive Director Martin Maqio hopeful of a successful event, with Police expected to field their second team as the first one will be in FKF-PL action against Kakamega Homeboyz on Sunday.

“The tournament’s main target is to bring together the police service and the civilians. There has been a bad relationship between the police and civilians but such events will foster good blood between them to bring understanding and cooperation. This will help in curbing crime since the community will be able to collaborate with the police service,” Maqio stated.

He notes the initiative is key especially ahead of the general elections in 2022.

“We will be able to reduce crime to a bigger percentage using dialogue as opposed to application of force. You have seen the way our police men and women sometimes have brutalized civilians specifically during this corona era which has caused a bad relationship between them. Thus, even as we approach the general elections we want to see a better relationship,” Maqio concluded.

Celebrated retired athlete and Peace Ambassador Tegla Lorupe, Kenya Academy of Sports CEO Dr. Doreen Odhiambo and Commissioner of Police Antony Kamitu will be among the key speakers in the event.
