Police, Telkom and Strathmore cruise to chastening victories

Defending champions Telkom Orange stretched their unbeaten streak to 16 matches after they walloped third placed Chase Amiras 5-1 in a Kenya Hockey Union Women Premier League match at City Park on Tuesday.

Jackie Mwangi gave the champions an early lead in the 20th minute after blasting home past Amiras goalkeeper Rachael Kerubo.

Kenyan international Barbara Simiyu ensured her name appeared on the score sheet by claiming a brace in the 34th and 50th minute, to put the league leaders on a comfortable victory.

Audrey Omaido and captain Lilian Aura also sounded the boards to wrap up the victory and open a 12 point lead at the summit of the women league table, while Yvette Kanyadong netted a consolation for her side.

The runaway leaders top the log on 48 points, with four matches to the end of the campaign, as they inch closer to a 20th title.

In another match played at the same venue, second placed Strathmore University showed no mercy to bottom placed University of Nairobi after  thrashing them 6-0.

Inspiring Gilly Okumu was the toast of the day after scoring a hat -trick to silence their opponents.

Okumu capitalized on set pieces that her side won, netting her first goal in the ninth minute via a penalty corner, before adding her second in the 37th minute.

Ten minutes to the last whistle, she made her way into the enemy’s penalty box and blasted home past goalkeeper Quinter Okore via a penalty stroke.

Lynn Ayuma, Denise Odongo and Winnie Ingati were also on target, netting a goal apiece.

Strathmore have won 11 matches out of 16 and are placed second on 36 points, 12 behind league leaders Telkom.

In the men’s Premier League, title favorites Kenya Police showed a stellar performance in their 6-1 emphatic win over struggling Technical University of Kenya (TUK).

The law enforcers who had a 2-1 win over third placed Green Sharks in their last assignment, found a way through TUK’s wobbly defence.

Victor Wekesa and Calvins Kanu scored a brace each with Oliver Echenje, Samuel Wokila and Vincent Odindo netting a goal each to silence the students.

TUK who succumbed to a 2-1 defeat in the first leg did not find a breakthrough to get a consolation goal.

Police still top the log with 67 points, 16 clear of second placed Butali Sugar Warriors from 24 outings.
