Posta bounce back as Likono sinks City Stars

Gearson Likono struck the all important goal as Posta Rangers bounced back to winning ways with a 1-0 win over Nairobi City Stars in a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) duel at Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

City Stars came to the game on the back of head coach John ‘Bobby’ Ogolla’s week-long strike following the crippling cash crisis at the Kawangware based side that has not been paying its staff their dues.

The defeat comes in the wake of coach John ‘Bobby’ Ogolla’s almost week-long strike, protesting for unpaid dues by the Nairobi’s Kawangware based Stars.

“We are still in the first half of the season so we cannot fear relegation. The fear can creep in if this trend continues. The team is demotivated but I am trying to overcome this.

“We have good players but I will need to add a goalkeeper, a good finisher, a full back and a central defender,” said the former Gor Mahia assistant coach after the match.

“We won but we should have done better. We were were slow in the second half but the important thing is that we won,” Posta boss, Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno told Citizen Digital with his side moving to 24 points on the KPL log as their beaten opponents remained second from bottom with 10.

Referee David Mulongo denied Posta what appeared a clear penalty in the 17th minute when Luis Masika handled the ball in the box.

But City Stars could not stop Likono three minutes later when he fired past keeper Ronny Kagunzi with a cracker to make it 1-0.

Oscar Mbugua then forced Kagunzi to a full length save with the ball going out for a corner as the Zico’s side took full control.

Just before the break, Posta’s Calvin Odongo found space on the right but fired straight to Kagunzi, who punched it out before John Amboko cleared.

Ogolla swapped Peter Musime with Yusuf Suf at the restart before he later withdrew Benson Iregi with Daniel Otieno and Joel Tata for Joseph Sakwa as he chased an equaliser.

Zico was forced to introduce Duncan Otieno for Collins Neto who struggling with an injury, before Joseph Nyaga came on for Titus Achesa.

Odongo limped off five minutes to time, paving way for Dennis Mukaisi as City Stars pressure surged and they almost found a late leveller when Suf rattled the woodwork with keeper Patrick Matasi moments to the final whistle.
