Pressure piles on Kisii Govt to speed up stadium construction

Kisii County Government has been challenged to put more effort in ensuring that sports talents in the region do no waste.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, FKF Nyanza chairman Yobes Mose asked the new County Minister in-charge of Sports, Duke Mainga, to hurry up the pace of the construction of the Gusii Stadium, to provide a platform for the region to earn income and promote talents.

“The Stadium has been on construction for the last six years, this has really delayed a number of activities and up to now it cannot host any international event like other stadia in the country,”Mose lamented.

“We are asking the county government to partner with FKF and other stakeholders across the sports spectrum to ensure that we are promoting sports activity in our county since we are professionals in various fields,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Sports Minister Mainga has vowed to fix the mess adding that his office is sealing the loopholes left by the previous administration.

“We have held lengthy talks with His Excellency  Governor James Ongwae on various issues concerning stadium, he has promised that in every financial year my office will be receiving some amount to ensure the completion of not only the  Gusii  Stadium but more others to support not just footballers but all sportsmen,” he said.

However, the Minister did not disclose the amount that has so been used in the construction, noting that he was not in charge of the department from the onset.

The county is the backyard of former topflight side Shabana FC who were relegated from the National Super League (NSL) following a spate of poor results orchestrated by lack of funds.

The public and sports persons from the county have been suffering in silence even as the construction of the stadium drags at a snail’s pace.
