Prisons escape Nkumba scare

Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) league champions Kenya Prisons came from behind to win their second preliminary match by 3-1 sets against well organized Nkumba University of Uganda as the African women Club Championship entered day four in Cairo, Egypt.

The five-time champions were stunned by the Ugandans in the first set going down 26-24 but restored parity in the second set winning 27-25. Buoyed by the equalizing set, the wardens went on to win the third and fourth sets 25-16 and 25-22 respectively.

Following the win, the Joseph Barasa coached side maintained leadership of Pool D on six points and are poised to sail through to the last eight on Tuesday if they win against 2014 champions GPS of Algeria

In a post-match reflection, Barasa said he was aware of the threat the Ugandans posed moreso after a first set scare.

“They were strong but we did not relent and we came out strong in the second set and after leveling I knew we would win, ” he said, adding; “Now we have two matches remaining in our pool which are very important and we can qualify if we win tomorrow but we want to sail through as group leaders .”

Prisons who are the last team from Kenya to win the continental championship when they bagged the honour in 2013 will wind up their preliminary matches on Wednesday against 2014 silver medallists El Shams of Egypt.

Meanwhile, after defeating Revenue Authority of Rwanda in straight sets on Sunday, six-time winners Kenya Pipeline will return to court Wednesday at 3pm against Shooting of Egypt in their second preliminary Pool C match.

Shooting are seeking their first win following a humiliating 3-0 loss to Cameroon’s FAP.

At the same time, Kenya Commercial Bank will square it out with Sporting of Egypt in their second Pool ‘B’ fixture from 5pm. The Japheth Munala coached side will then wind up their preliminary matches against 2017 champions Carthage of Tunisia on Wednesday.

The nine-day event which has attracted 17 teams will serve out on March 25
