Prisons itching to sweep every title on offer

The 2016 Kenya Men Volleyball Premier League champions Kenya Prisons have intensified their training ahead of the new season with the head coach Paul Muthinja itching to claim the 2018 Men Africa Club Championship that will serve-off from March 25 to April 6 in Cairo, Egypt.

Muthinja, speaking to Citizen Digital, expressed confidence of clinching the elusive title.

The Kenya Prisons men team lost in the 2010 finals falling to 12-time winners, Egyptian powerhouse Al-Ahly to settle for silver but Muthinja is keen to get one over their 2010 tormentors.

“We have stepped up our outdoor training for this year’s continental assignment and the new season too. I am hoping to win this title which has been evading us for the longest time. We also want to win the national title again,” an upbeat Muthinja said.

Prisons, who finished as quarter- finalists in last year’s Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) has, in the meantime, made the reclamation of the league title from the General Service Unit(GSU) their top target.

The domestic competition kicks off on March 2, and in a bid to boost their quest, Prisons have acquired three new talents.

They include Mike Chemosi who did not participate in last year’s edition due to professional commitments in Qatar, Elvas Makuto, who has been signed from the 2016 Federation of East Africa Secondary Championship (FEASSA) volleyball champions Malava Boys. Ronald Bitok, who has been acquired from second division Cooperative, is another new blood.

It is also a massive boost for Prisons after the appointment of the club’s former left attacker Dennis Mokua as the assistant coach following the streamlining of the technical bench.

Mokua has been a long-time member of the team and a dependable player. He’s a former international player who has also played professional volleyball in Japan.

The other three teams which will represent Kenya in this year’s CAVB edition are the last year’s men national champions GSU with Kenya Pipeline and Kenya Prisons lined up for the female teams.
