Prisons lead familiar foes into KVF womens play-offs

Defending champions Kenya Prisons will line up against familiar foes KCB, Kenya Pipeline and DCI during next week’s Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) National League play-offs in Mombasa.

The quartet finished in the top four positions respectively after the final leg of the regular season which was held at the Kamiti Maximum Security Prisons grounds in Nairobi on Saturday and Sunday.

Prisons, who are eyeing the women’s title for the third year in a row, eased into the playoffs set for August 27 to 29 at the Makande Gymnasium, after topping the standings unbeaten on 18 points.

KCB, former champions Kenya Pipeline and DCI completed the play-offs line up finishing with 15, 12 and nine points respectively in the seven-team league.

The four will join reigning men’s champions General Service Unit (GSU), Kenya Prisons, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in the play-offs after the quartet qualified last month during the final men’s league leg.

Record league winners GSU topped the men charts underlining their intentions to bag an unprecedented 14th title with David Lungáho-coached Kenya Prisons finishing runners up followed by KPA and KDF respectively.

At Kamiti, Prisons spanked DCI 3-1 (16-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21) on Saturday before winding up the regular season with an identical win of (25-19, 23-25, 28-26, 25-16) against KDF on Sunday to give a sneak-peak of what awaits during the three-day play-offs.

KCB, who are eyeing their first league in over a decade, thumped bottom-placed Nairobi Water 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-18) on Saturday to wrap up the season on a high note while Pipeline edged out DCI in straight sets (25-17, 27-25, 25-13) on Sunday to finish third.

The Oilers dismissed KDF 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-14) in their penultimate fixture on Saturday.

Earlier on Sunday, Nairobi Prisons defeated Nairobi Water 3-1 sets (25-11, 15-25, 25-22, 25-17) with the defeat leaving the latter pegged on the bottom without a single win after six rounds.

After the completion of the playoffs, the top two teams in the two categories will clinch automatic tickets for Men’s and Women’s African Clubs Championship set for next year.
